Circle Buys Tazapay for $400M to Expand USDC Payments

USDC issuer Circle has agreed to buy Singapore payments firm Tazapay for $400 million, a deal meant to speed up cross-border stablecoin payments worldwide.

Circle has agreed to buy Tazapay, a Singapore-based cross-border payments company, in an all-stock deal worth $400 million. The USDC issuer disclosed the agreement Monday in a filing with the SEC.

Tazapay runs B2B payment rails across more than 100 markets, with over 60 banking and fintech partners and roughly $25 billion in annualized payment volume. The more telling number: as of late July, more than 60% of that volume was already moving through stablecoins. Circle isn't just buying a payments company — it's buying one that had already migrated much of its business onto its own technology.

The logic behind the deal is straightforward. Circle wants USDC to move anywhere in the world in seconds, any day of the week, without waiting on bank holidays or weekend cutoffs. The hard part of stablecoin payments has never been moving tokens — it's the last mile, converting crypto back into local currency and landing it in someone's bank account. Tazapay hands Circle ready-made payout rails across Asia, the Middle East and other emerging markets, not just another way to shuffle tokens around.

Tazapay's existing customers shouldn't notice much: Circle says pricing, APIs and support stay the same. The deal still needs sign-off from Singapore's Monetary Authority and isn't expected to close until 2027.

The purchase lands in the middle of a broader scramble over cross-border stablecoin payments. Visa, Stripe and Google rolled out their own rival stablecoin, OUSD, earlier this summer, and bank consortiums keep multiplying. Circle's answer isn't to out-issue its rivals — it's to buy the plumbing that gets money to the person on the other end, the piece a token alone was never going to solve.
