Cloudflare launches a gateway that charges AI agents in USDC

Cloudflare has opened a closed beta for Monetization Gateway, a service that lets websites charge AI agents in USDC for every visit, bypassing subscriptions and credit cards entirely.

Picture this: instead of you opening a dozen browser tabs and signing up for subscriptions, your AI assistant does it — and pays for each click with pocket change instead of a credit card. That's the system Cloudflare, one of the world's biggest internet infrastructure operators, switched on this Wednesday.

The new service is called Monetization Gateway. It lets website, API and dataset owners set a price for every request an AI agent makes — loading a page, calling a function, pulling a slice of data. Under the hood, it revives HTTP status code 402, "Payment Required," a fixture of the web's plumbing that's sat unused for decades. An agent hits a site, gets bounced with a payment demand, sends USDC, and gets through — no human required.

Settlement happens on Base, the blockchain built by Coinbase, with payment verification handled by Coinbase's x402 protocol. Access is currently limited to a closed waitlist for US-based participants. Cloudflare product manager Rohin Lohe said the company plans to keep expanding features through the rest of the year, with a broader rollout targeted for early 2027.

This builds on a move Cloudflare made in August, when it introduced cloudflare.pay wallets to identify and authorize AI agents. Now there's a way to actually charge them. The logic is straightforward: as bots and agents increasingly crawl the web to answer user questions, site owners need a way to get paid for that traffic instead of just absorbing the bandwidth and compute costs for free.

The bet on stablecoins isn't incidental. Card networks and bank transfers aren't built for fractions of a cent per request, and that's the price range this "agentic economy" runs on. Circle's CEO published a lengthy essay over the summer arguing stablecoins are the natural currency for machine-to-machine payments. Cloudflare's move is the first time that idea has moved from theory into infrastructure actual websites can plug into.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about this article

What is Cloudflare's Monetization Gateway?

It's a service that lets website, API and dataset owners charge AI agents in USDC for every request — no subscriptions or credit cards involved.

How does the payment work technically?

It uses the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code: the agent is asked to pay, sends USDC on the Base blockchain, the payment is verified by Coinbase's x402 protocol, and access opens automatically.

Who has access to the service right now?

Access is currently limited to a closed waitlist for US-based participants, with a broader rollout planned for early 2027.

Why USDC instead of regular money?

Card networks and bank transfers aren't built for payments of fractions of a cent per request, which is the range AI agent transactions run in. A stablecoin allows fast micropayments without intermediaries.
